Born from the dredged mud of False Creek in 1915-16, “Industrial Island” has fulfilled its role in the development of Vancouver, first as a centre supporting heavy industry and adding to the commercial and economic might of the downtown core. By the 1970s, with new visions and regulations focusing on the cleaning up and redevelopment of the downtown and False Creek areas, Granville Island was transformed into a tourist and artisanal milieu, which continues to thrive and to contribute to the cultural élan. So what is that concrete plant still doing there? Come find out! Revisit the past and the present of this island – you won’t believe the stories!
