Public Screening: Vancouver — A Distant Mirror

November 15, 2015
3 PM – 6 PM

The sixth annual screening of historical films from the City of Vancouver Archives will be presented at the Vancity Theatre this November.

The screening of Vancouver — A Distant Mirror will feature never-before-seen movies dating from the 1920s to the 1970s.

Local historian Michael Kluckner will host the viewings, providing historical insight and background for each film. Movies will be presented both silently and with soundtracks. Pianist Wayne Stewart will provide live musical accompaniment for the silent movies.

Shows have been sold out for the last five years, so additional screenings will be held this November, as well as an encore screening of the 2013 show, Reflecting the City: Movies from the City of Vancouver Archives on Sunday, November 15, 2015 at 7:15 pm at the Vancity Theatre.

Filming Friends and Family: Features domestic lives of Vancouverites from the 1920s to 1960s, including acting in a dramatized home movie, doing the twist at home, and playing with dogs and cats in the backyard.

Out with a Camera: Features once-common past times in Vancouver from the 1930s to 1960s, including maintaining the automobile at the neighbourhood service garage, viewing a grain elevator fire in the Burrard Inlet, and riding the city’s last streetcar.

Old False Creek: Features a more industrial False Creek from the 1950s to 1970s, including the barrel manufacturer Sweeney Cooperage, and a sound version of the construction of the current Granville Street Bridge.

A Distant Mirror: Features a bus tour through Vancouver during the 1940s showing many early buildings currently marked by present-day heritage status. This section also features Vancouver’s first Grey Cup Parade in 1955.
