Public Lecture: Citizen Engagement and Political Civility with Carolyn J. Lukensmeyer
Simon Fraser University’s Centre for Dialogue presents Carolyn J. Lukensmeyer, Executive Director of the National Institute for Civil Discourse and founder of AmericaSpeaks. As one of the foremost citizen engagement practitioners in North America, Dr. Lukensmeyer has gathered public input on issues ranging from the redevelopment of the World Trade Centre after 9/11 to the rebuilding of New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina.
Dr. Lukensmeyer will showcase ideas for how governments can engage citizens on a massive scale to receive meaningful and intelligent input into policy decisions, using 21st Century Town Halls to blend in-person and online engagement. She will also examine the role of civility in political discourse and suggest how governments and citizens can work to address increasing levels of political dysfunction.
