Heritage Vancouver Top 10 Tour + Talk: False Creek South: Past, Present and Future
False Creek South is a historic urban landscape and widely-admired success story, which demonstrated the transformation of inner city industrial land into a residential enclave with a housing mix inclusive of all ages and incomes and designed for pedestrians.
Located north of 6th Avenue between the Burrard and Cambie Bridges, the neighbourhood features low- to mid-rise housing clustered around gardens, courtyards, plazas, walking and cycling paths and a waterfront park.
Reflecting the 1970s values of a livable city and quality of life, the area was developed with a mix of one-third non-market rental housing, co-ops and condos in a Garden City landscape setting on leased, City-owned lands.
During Placemaking Week, join us in launching a new series of tours on the Top 10. The tour of False Creek South will explore the community vision, planning, urban design, development and current issues shaping the future of this historic area.
This tour will unfold as a discussion between guest speakers:
Dr. Thomas Hutton, Professor and Associate Director, Centre for Human Settlements, School of Community and Regional Planning, University of British Columbia
Nathan Edelson, consultant to the False Creek South Community Association Re*Plan Committee, and retired Senior Planner for the Downtown Eastside, City of Vancouver
Tom and Nathan will explore the 1970s political vision for False Creek South to create a socially diverse and inclusive neighbourhood on the former industrial lands, the City of Vancouver master plan and its implementation, and perspectives on the current issues of the renewal of leases, housing mix, increased density and infill design.
Helen Cain will facilitate this tour and talk. Helen is a former Heritage Vancouver Board director, Past-President of Heritage BC, and a community, heritage and development planner. She is currently the heritage planner in Policy Planning at the City of Richmond.
The tour will begin at the Spyglass Place ferry landing under Cambie Street Bridge, close to Olympic Village Canada Line Station, and will end near to False Creek South Community Centre located on Granville Island. Please wear comfortable shoes and prepare for rain.
