Featured Event: The Human Scale: Film Screening And Discussion
If you’re not otherwise sitting on pins and needles as the fate of the free world is being decided, why not come out to a film screening on a subject that feels… decidedly more humanistic than much of the US election. This Tuesday, November 8, the VPSN’s Andrew Pask and Stewart Burgess will be part of a panel discussing The Human Scale – an excellent film on the work and influence of Jan Gehl and his colleagues at Gehl Architects. The event is being organized by the PIBC South Coast Chapter and coincides with World Town Planning Day.
The event takes place at the excellent Rio Theatre (Broadway and Commercial). And as a bonus… once the event is finished, the theatre will be showing live coverage of election night results as they roll in.
Here’s the event post from the PIBC:
Join the Planning Institute of BC’s South Coast Chapter for a screening and discussion of The Human Scale.
50 % of the world’s population lives in urban areas. By 2050 this will increase to 80%. Life in a mega city is both enchanting and problematic. Today we face peak oil, climate change, loneliness and severe health issues due to our way of life. But why? The Danish architect and professor Jan Gehl has studied human behavior in cities through 40 years. He has documented how modern cities repel human interaction, and argues that we can build cities in a way, which takes human needs for inclusion and intimacy into account.
