Public Space Forum: Street Vending and the Vital Economy

Busy street market with various wares for sale and people strolling around.

November 18, 2019
7 PM – 8:30 PM

Many of us flock to market districts when we’re traveling. We scan the random wares for sale, enjoy the bustling aisles between tents, tables and blankets, the hawking of vendors, and the variety of exchanges taking place. So why is Vancouver’s street vending not celebrated the way that other cities’ street markets are, and how can we change that?

Come join us for this free panel discussion on informal street vending and public marketplaces in Vancouver.

RSVP

Panelists:
Constance Barnes, Executive Director, Downtown Eastside Market.
Mark Defreitas & Sonia Bruins, Vendors and Binners.
José Fernández-García & Colleen Hamilton, Community Development & Economic Planners, City of Vancouver

With this panel of street vending experts we will explore:

  • What function does informal vending have in public space?
  • How does street vending contribute to or challenge our conceptions of public space?
  • Where does Vancouver stand internationally when it comes to public vending and markets?
  • Do marketplaces need public space?
  • Does public space need marketplaces?
  • What does it mean to have formal versus informal marketplaces?

Please bring your own questions!
