For the past several elections, the Vancouver Public Space Network (VPSN) has worked to help voters better understand the perspectives of candidates running for office. For the upcoming by-election, we’ve prepared a short candidate survey focused on public space matters. The questions cover a variety of topics, some more general in nature, some more closely related to current issues. We’ve shared the survey with all the candidates, sharing news via email, social media channels or both.

We invited each candidate to share their responses so that public space enthusiasts and other Vancouverites can get to know them better.

Questions are intentionally open-ended. We told candidates that their answers could be as long or as short as they like, and that they can include examples or precedents if they wish. We’ll publish the answers in their entirety on our website within 48 hours of receiving them. Let’s see what they have to say about public space in the city!

Our pal Mark Busse (host of Creative Mornings Vancouver, and fab MC for our Last Candidate Standing event back in 2014) has recently sent a survey out to all of the candidates running for a Council seat as part of the upcoming by-election. One of the questions concerns public space:

“Have you supported public space activations in Vancouver, and will you in the future? (i.e. closures of 800 Robson and Bute/Robson for public space plazas, laneway activations, etc.)”

All nine candidates answered – though some with a bit more detail than others. You can read the answers to this and other questions on Mark’s blog. Once you’ve done that, please remember to cast your ballot! Advance voting takes place on October 10, and Election Day is October 14.
