Our next Vancouver Public Space Network monthly meeting features a guest presentation by Antony Hodgson on the subject of electoral reform at both the provincial and municipal level.
In just a few days, eligible votors in BC will be able to cast their ballot in a referendum on electoral reform – and will be asked to choose the voting system we should use for provincial elections. The key choice is between the existing First Past the Post system, and a new Proportional Representation model. This is a critical moment in the history of the province. The referendum is being held by mail from October 22 to November 30, 2018.
At the same time, there has also been an active discussion about the potential to reform Vancouver’s own muncipal vote. In 2017, City Council received a report from the Independent Election Taskforce. The Taskforce recommended a number of changes related to the voting system, campaign finance, and voter engagement that are aimed at improving local democracy.
Antony Hodgson’s presentation will focus on the various options that are being considered at both levels of government, and the pros and cons of each. There will be opportunity for Q&A.
