July 8, 2017 – July 9, 2017
9 AM – 3 PM

The following event is being organized by Hua Foundation, South Asian Canadian Histories Association – SACHA, Indian Summer Festival and SFU Woodward’s.

Vancouver’s Chinatown and Punjabi Market sit in an urban twilight zone – the question is whether they are at a sunrise or a sunset. For a hundred and thirty-five years in the case of Chinatown, and half a century in the case of Punjabi Market, these two neighbourhoods have been more than just places where commerce happens. They have been the heart of their communities, nurturing businesses, human relationships, artists, food systems and cultural legacies. Today they stand on the brink of extinction. How do we imagine their future?

MARKET TOURS
Get a lived sense of these two important Vancouver neighbourhoods, with experts who will introduce you to their streets, shops, heritage buildings, stories and characters. A bus will ferry participants between the two markets and the ticket includes a lunch sourced from both markets. Tour participants are invited to stay on for the panel discussion that follows lunch. Tour guides are: Robert Sung and Kevin Huang (Chinatown), Paneet Singh and Milan Singh (Punjabi Market).

Tickets are $25 and include lunch and transfers.

Join us immediately after lunch for A Tale of Two Markets, panel discussion steered by noted urban planner Andy Yan featuring Melissa Fong, Tyler Russell, Meera Bains, and Paneet Singh.
