“Cliff wants to put more focus on our Community Centers during his term to better use their spaces, and make them a hub for communities. Cliff also wants to improve our community gyms and make them more competitive and more affordable. With the high cost of living in Vancouver, Cliff wants to make our parks and Community Centers more accessible to make up a gap most are facing due to growing unaffordability.”

1. What is your favourite park or park board facility in Vancouver, and why?

Kensington Community Center, and Queen Elizabeth Park

2. We’ll be sharing the top three priorities that you provided the City of Vancouver, but we want to know: which one of your three priorities are you most passionate about, and why?

Improve Community Centres. The cost of living in Vancouver is very high, and it’s going to keep going up. Newer generations aren’t going to be able to afford the space or backyards that other generations have been able to get, and are going to need to turn to our Centres and our parks to make of the difference. I want our Community Centres to become hubs for people to connect, which I can’t understate how important that is.

3. Vancouver is a growing city! What are your ideas for ensuring that the city’s parks and recreation facilities can respond to the needs of an increasing and diversifying population?

I want to improve our city gyms and improve their hours to get more people using them. It promote more active lifestyles, and with it being cheaper, it would help people save money, and keep it in the local economy. Also introducing more broad programs into our community centers, and modernize what is offered will help connect people, and help people cross social lines and make new relationships.

4. Given the high cost of land in the city, what suggestions do you have for how the Park Board should approach the creation of new park spaces?

I would like to see more space made in East Vancouver, to help distribute the funding more around. Many more people are going further east as rent increases, so having more space in East Vancouver is something that is going to need to happen.

5. What, if any, role do you see the Park Board playing in responding to critical social issues such as homelessness, the opioid epidemic, and social isolation?

Part of my platform is revitalizing our community centers to become more social hubs so people can connect, and reducing their costs and making them more competitive will help deal with social isolation. With homelessness and opioids, Community centers need to support groups that are able to address that more directly, so offering resources that the Parks Board isn’t immediately using to help out those organizations is probably one of the better ways that the Parks Board can help.

6. In the past few years, the Park Board has taken steps to acknowledge First Nations cultures and the impacts of colonization on local Indigenous communities. Would you continue this work? If yes, how?

I believe the 11-part program that is being utilized right now is a huge step forward. There has been work on reconciliation, including a truth telling phase. I would like to continue this, and as we continue with it get feedback from Indigenous communities on how well we are progressing. This is a serious, deep issue, and we need to continue to do it, that is respectful to Indigenous people, and keeps Indigenous people involved in the process.

7. How can Vancouver’s parks and recreation facilities best respond to the challenges posed by climate change?

1) Make sure our plans continue to move towards sustainability 2) Make sure our parks and recreation facilities are accessible to help centralize the burdens we’ll be facing

8. What, if any, role do you think privately owned companies should play in the management, operation, or naming/branding of Park board facilities?

Naming: Of Facilities, off the table. Of some events? I’m open to that. Management and Operation: I believe we can attract the right people to keep it in-house. But there are things that we’re going to need to look outside for. It takes a lot to develop particular technologies, and that’s something we should be using. There’s a lot we’re already doing in this area, and I think overall, we’re doing pretty good.

9. What, if any, role do you feel that neighbourhoods or community groups should play in the stewardship of park spaces and facilities?

My third priority is ‘Involve Community groups’, so I believe it’s pretty clear what direction I’m leaning in. :)

10. Is there anything else you would like to share about yourself or your platform?

I grew up on a farm, so I may have a different outlook than a lot of people. But, if you ever want to go for a walk and pick up some garbage with me, it might make for a fun hour for us.
