Our friends at Frida + Frank are pulling together an excellent event for late-January, which aims to animate public space at this colder, rainier time of the year. On Saturday, January 27 they are inviting local placemakers to create an intervention and get outside and embrace the rain. Interventions can be as simple as splashing in the puddles, or as wild as creating a rain activated art-piece. The intent of this day-long celebration is to spark discussion on how we can positively change the way we view winter.

You can join the Winteraction Facebook page to gather and share ideas. There’s also some funding available! Frida &frank is looking to provide selected projects with up to $250 to create winter activations in public space. Applications are due January 4 at noon.

Here’s the complete Call for Proposals:

Winteraction:
a seasonal celebration of connection and play

With over 160 average days of rainfall each year, you’d think we’d have this whole “rain” thing figured out in Vancouver by now. Each winter people put on their uniform of black raincoats and boots, dispersing monochromatic gloom across damp city streets.

As people keep their eyes to the ground and head straight to their destination to stay dry, there’s not much opportunity to interact with our fellow city dwellers! This is made even worse by the lack of covered public space in Vancouver, which makes spontaneous engagements scarce in the wintertime. No wonder so many Vancouverites feel pressures of social isolation and Seasonal Affective Disorder.

It’s time to take Winteraction!

We believe that the rain shouldn’t make the city shut down. Together, let’s make Vancouver the greatest place to be on a rainy day! While cities all over the world face similar rain-related problems as we do, there isn’t a copy and paste solution for rainproofing Vancouver. This provides an amazing opportunity for us to play and experiment with how to work with the rain!

By working in unison with nature and embracing the rain, we are able to focus on social healing rather than threaten social and physical wellness. Together, with the community, we will act as urban catalysts to encourage social healing through Seasonal Effective Design.

On Saturday, January 27 we invite you to join us in our celebration of winter connection: Winteraction! Become local placemakers and get outside and embrace the rain. These interventions can be as simple as splashing in the puddles, or as wild as creating a rain activated art-piece. This day-long celebration looks to spark discussion through impact-driven creative solutions which will positively change the way we view winter.

We want to get people thinking creatively and positively about the rain! The more who participate, the better!

Winteraction will be taking place across the globe and is open for all to participate! Feel free to reach out for international support and share your photos and videos by using #winteraction and #timeforwinteraction. Join our Facebook page to gather and share ideas, and to take a look if there’s anything happening near you or to share your own event.
